Cape Catley Ltd is a small, independent publishing house established by Christine Cole Catley in the Marlborough Sounds in 1973 and relocated to Devonport in 2000. The publisher’s interests include New Zealand fiction, children’s books, social justice, feminism, politics, local history, biography and autobiography, health, gardening and yachting.

Victoria University Press is a major scholarly publisher specialising in New Zealand history and public affairs. The Press is also a leading publisher of fiction and poetry. Founded in the 1970s, Victoria University Press now has a backlist of over 200 books in print, and on average issues twenty five new titles each year.

Steele Roberts Publishing is a small, independent company focusing on quality literature and non-fiction. Its list includes art, business, Māori, self-help, current affairs and children’s books. Steele Roberts has been publishing since 1996.

Spinal Publications (NZ) Ltd is an independent, New Zealand-owned company, established in 1980 with the release of Robin McKenzie’s Treat Your Own Back, which has sold over three million copies in 17 languages. Spinal Publications specialises in medical and health-related titles. The company warehouses and distributes its titles throughout New Zealand and overseas with an international network of 21 licensed distributors.

The New Zealand division of Random House Inc, Random House (NZ) Ltd publishes under the Vintage, Black Swan, Godwit, Arrow and Random House imprints. Genres include fiction, natural history, cooking, art, design, architecture, gardening, poetry, children’s, biography, business and general New Zealand non-fiction. Random House distributes all Random House and Transworld imprints, as well as books published by Victoria University Press, Longacre Press, New Holland Publishers, Huia Publishers, Te Papa Press, Gecko Press and Hardie Grant. The company’s collegial relationship with Random House Australia allows for the distribution of many of its titles in the Australian market.
 

A division of Pearson, Penguin Group (NZ) produces about 80–100 new books a year under the Penguin, Viking, Raupo and Puffin imprints. These cover a very wide subject range, from literary fiction, history and biography to lifestyle, cookery and children’s books.

Pearson is the local subsidiary of Pearson Education, the largest educa­tional publisher in the world. Pearson publishes 100–120 new titles each year, all designed for the New Zealand and export educational markets. Pearson is also active in publishing in te reo Māori. Pearson Education is the agent for WW Norton.

Otago University Press publishes about twenty scholarly works and books for general readers each year, distributed internationally. Special emphasis is given to original research in history, the arts, natural history and social and health sciences, while more general books include the Local Guides ecotourism series. The Press also publishes Landfall, New Zealand’s leading literary and arts journal, and some new writing.

New Holland Publishers’ local publishing programme has grown dramatically over the past decade. It now boasts more than 200 quality non-fiction titles across a wide range of genres, including travel, natural history, outdoor pursuits, food, wine, gardening, art, gift, humour, reference, history, environmental issues and, most recently, children’s books. The company also imports books of a similar nature from its associate companies in London, Sydney and Cape Town, as well as from agency principals.

A division of a multinational book publisher and distributor, HarperCollins Publishers (NZ) Ltd also generates its own exciting and successful New Zealand publishing programme. In addition to handling HarperCollins’ internationally published titles, this large, well-established company represents a number of other local and overseas publishers.
