Victoria University Press is a major scholarly publisher specialising in New Zealand history and public affairs. The Press is also a leading publisher of fiction and poetry. Founded in the 1970s, Victoria University Press now has a backlist of over 200 books in print, and on average issues twenty five new titles each year.

Te Papa Press is the publishing imprint of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Founded in 1997, Te Papa Press publishes a wide range of catalogues, museum books and scholarly research titles based on collections and exhibitions, as well as richly illustrated contemporary and historical art books and award-winning popular books that represent New Zealand’s unique national identity. Te Papa Press books are beautiful objects, valuable reference tools and engaging narratives of New Zealand.

Taramea Publishing is an independent publishing company. It focuses on stories about Aotearoa and the Pacific, be they educational, historical, fictional, non-fictional or for children. Taramea encourages and nurtures New Zealand writers. Its children’s stories are available in Māori and English.

Steele Roberts Publishing is a small, independent company focusing on quality literature and non-fiction. Its list includes art, business, Māori, self-help, current affairs and children’s books. Steele Roberts has been publishing since 1996.

Established in 1990, RSVP Publishing Company Ltd is a small, indepen­dent company publishing a few titles each year. RSVP Pub​lishing specialises in eclectic metaphysical books, but is also willing to consider valuable, innovative fiction and non-fiction work. The company distri­butes its own titles within New Zealand. It is company policy to always print onshore.

The New Zealand division of Random House Inc, Random House (NZ) Ltd publishes under the Vintage, Black Swan, Godwit, Arrow and Random House imprints. Genres include fiction, natural history, cooking, art, design, architecture, gardening, poetry, children’s, biography, business and general New Zealand non-fiction. Random House distributes all Random House and Transworld imprints, as well as books published by Victoria University Press, Longacre Press, New Holland Publishers, Huia Publishers, Te Papa Press, Gecko Press and Hardie Grant. The company’s collegial relationship with Random House Australia allows for the distribution of many of its titles in the Australian market.
 

Short-run academic publications are a speciality. Polygraphia has a special interest in educational resources for Classical Studies and prepares and publishes books and teaching resources. Polygraphia publishes fiction and non-fiction titles, and a limited number of children’s books. Photographic material is another area of interest – the company produces illustrated books and books of photographs, and high quality prints for display. Many of Polygraphia’s titles are available as ebooks, and the company offers a service to prepare texts for digitising. Polygraphia is a small company able to work professionally while maintaining the personal touch.
